If any company deserved this more it is honestly EA or Square Enix, but Activision is a close third. Honestly all four of these companies are completely toxic towards developers and consumers, however I can trust that even if servers for their games shut down I can still play local co-op or single player content. Now onto Ubisoft, recently servers were to be shut down for the game The Crew a relatively standard racer, similar to Forza. Now this isn’t a surprise The Crew had a dwindling player base and some of these games use real car models so licensing and permissions could be an issue for long term, but what Ubisoft failed to tell players and consumers was that the disc and steam game only gave access to the game. This meant that when the Crew shut down there was no way to access even single player content as the whole game existed on a separate server essentially these acted as keys to the game. This breaks the consumer protection laws and means that when the Crew went down even with a physical disc people couldn’t access content they paid $60 for. So people sued and while they are asking for refunds and damages this could open a class action lawsuit against Ubisoft.
It is no real surprise that Ubisoft landed in this trouble for years they have been saying that gamers should get used to not owning their games, however they never really acted on things like that till now and even after all of this it is likely that no one realized the extent they would go. Theoretically they have stolen things that people rightfully paid for essentially stealing money and property and possible wire fraud. I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know what they could be charged for, but realistically they will keep throwing money at the suit till it goes away.
