• Minecraft Movie Looks Bad

Alright, so the Minecraft movie honestly looks awful. First, Minecraft’s player base is targeted to all ages not just kids, but the movie’s marketing is mostly aimed at children. Also, consistency, zombies, Pigman, and villagers as well as several human like creatures show up in these trailers and they fit into the world around them, but the main characters are live action it feels off they stick out like a sore thumb. The reason Pikachu and Sonic’s redesign in live action works is because it fits with the world around them. Designers of these characters spent hours trying to make it work here it feels as though the actors don’t fit in the world aesthetically. The world is blocky and the environments look like they do in the game, but the main cast just look like they don’t fit in the world. Imagine if in the Mario movie every major character would suddenly be live action when the world around them is filled with cartoony enemies and characters. Further, even if Steve is here he doesn’t look like Minecraft Steve. Jack Black who plays him is a good voice actor and while he has done live action it is so unfitting here. In the Sonic movies I can still tell who the characters are despite their redesign the same goes for Detective Pikachu I can tell that it is Pikachu among other Pokemon that were featured.

Minecraft is a staple of the games industry mostly because it started as a indie game that was easy to understand hard to master. It embraces creativity and imagination, but also has things for survival and the ability to choose how you want to play.

  • Thank Goodness You’re Here VS Untitled Goose Game

Alright recently I’ve been trying to focus more on smaller games or by small teams. So inevitably I was going to cover Untitled Goose Game, however a few major hiccups happened. Thank Goodness You’re Here released late last year in August and I wasn’t really interested in talking about it. Well it just went on sale on Switch not long ago and I wanted to talk about more Indie games so this happened. Both focus on slapstick humor taking place in English towns. House House being Australian and Coal Supper near Yorkshire being incredibly small Indie Studios and both published by the same company perhaps the most inappropriately named Panic Inc. Given they are also responsible for Firewatch, Arco, and multiple mobile games they publish great stuff that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

Both these games have their focus on comedy, but I found Thank Goodness You’re Here is actually funnier mostly due to trying to be a cartoon rather than more realistic and grounded like Untitled Goose Game. Now Thank Goodness You’re Here has a shorter game time, but you’ll be free to explore until all of the objectives finish up then the area and there are only the move, jump, and slap buttons. Untitled Goose Game works the same way, but rather than the player finding the objectives on their own it has a checklist that crosses out as the player completes it. Along with its stealth gameplay, you have a raise and lower head movement to stay hidden, a honk button to cause distractions, a flap wings button that is useful in some circumstances, basic controls and a run button.

Both are very simple games that can be beaten relatively quickly. They are oddly more satisfying than the $60 full priced game. At $20 each they aren’t long, but great games that deserve attention.

  • The Plucky Squire Review

This game is a platformer and puzzle game. I have never oddly hated and enjoyed something so much. This game is oddly fun and I love the gameplay. Combat is fun enough and controls great with a basic attack and ranged boomerang sword attack, along with optional Spin and Jump attacks. Each move is upgradable and easy to use and control. The puzzles are good and there is a hint system by talking to a character to help you out. There are secrets and collectibles. Then you get to the boss fights a lot of them are just minigames and not very good I am going to list out the bosses and say what is wrong. To solve puzzles often you need to jump out the book and use varying tools to your advantage.

Chapter 1 boss fight is a punchout style minigame with dodging and punching when the boss misses. For the most part it is fine not terrible, but not good. It reappears later during the final boss.

Chapters 2 and 3 handle as a tutorial there is no boss fight for either.

Chapter 4 has a boss fight where you hit a big bug and several smaller bugs with an bow and arrow, but aiming and charging is slow and take some getting used too.

Chapter 5 This level is also a tutorial that teaches the player how to use the Tilt Book mechanic. Given this ability is mostly used on difficult puzzles and not really combat focused it is fine.

Chapter 6 has a boss fight with the worst rythem game mechanics I have ever had the displeasure of playing. the hit box is off at times and even if you are getting the timing right somehow you will still be wrong. This also shows up at the final boss where it is much harder to even move and react. After it has a more traditional boss fight with the use of the Stop Stamp that freezes things in the storybook.

Chapter 7 despite you given the Bomb Stamp and Battle in the title of this chapter. there is no noticable boss fights just setup for the next chapters and is heavily puzzle focused.

Chapter 8 This Chapter has the worst Boss fight not because it is hard, but because the RNG mechanics. So this fight is a match three bubble shooter game making this less about skill and more luck. You will lose this game when you get tons of the colors you don’t. Keep in mind that unlike other games with this mechanic you can’t bank shots to hold for later or angle shots. Given the RNG you could very well be stuck for awhile hoping for better luck. It also gets much worse. This boss fight reappears during the final boss.

Chapter 9 This is the worst fight in the game remember the minigames we all had so much “fun” with. They are back and harder than last time still doable, but not good. Thrash has a section where the rythem game is so bad any damage you take will override your command and Thrash will stand there and take damage there are no i frames either so you just take tons of damage without being able to do anything, Violets minigame is second and the problems with the chapter 8 boss fight return with a vengeance, then there is the next phase the Punchout style minigame once again it isn’t really any harder and can easily be beaten, finally a 3D Shooter it also isn’t hard just hold down shoot and dodge when needed.

I feel like the puzzles, art style, and combat carry this game and those are fun, but the boss fights almost ruin this game. Thankfully you can skip minigames whenever you want and even though I did encounter a game breaking bug where transitioning from the Storybook to the outside world got me stuck in the floor it does autosave often so I just reloaded a save, but with such a focus on minigames it makes the combat feel useless and spending hours just to beat one minigame because of bad mechanics means I spent more time with the minigame than the actual game.

    Score 6.5/10

  • Pokemon Day

As usual I have not looked at any leaks mostly because I can’t verify that information. I still would not cover it if I could something feels wrong to me about sharing information that could be wrong or falsified and to share that would be a failure on my part. I know most say that this time the announcements were fairly predictable, but it still is worth a look.

    Pokemon Concierge

This was the first thing mentioned and while the stop motion looks good. I find it a pointless announcement since the series was already announced last year. The first 4 episodes are available on the Pokemon Youtube Channel until March 9th.

    Mobile Games

A new event focusing Unova and introducing Black and White Kyrem to the mobile game Pokemon Go. You can also encounter Victini and a shiny Meloetta making this the second time to get a legitimate shiny Meloetta. Primal Reversion Groudon, Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza along with Brendan, May, and Steven are all coming to Pokemon Masters EX along with new story events.A new dish based on Appltun is being released for Cafe Remix along with Flapple and Appletun able to visit your cafe. The Paldea Starters, Pikachu and Eevee are getting special outfits all on Febuary, 28, 2025. Pokemon Sleep is having a Darkrai and Cresselia event. Alolan Raichu, Suicune, and Alcremie are all coming to Pokemon Unite and will be released throughout the year. The Triuphant Light themed pack is coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket the 28 of Febuaray and Mega Evolution cards later on.

The mobile games announcements weren’t really groundbreaking espicially since a lot of the information is just some new events and have at most spent a few seconds talking about them Unite, Go, and TCG had the most time spent on them with good reason. Go is their biggest game, Unite is popular competitively, and TCG just released last year.

    Video Games

Some Rotom Case is being given away for Scarlett and Violet along with Mass Outbreak events and other events. Starter evolution Tera Raid events will be coming out throughout the year. Then a new game by the name of Pokemon Champions with the focus on battling. Next the Jhoto Starters Totodile, Chikorita, and the Unova Starter Tepig were revealed as the Starters for Pokemon Legends AZ along with some characters and a primary location along with wild zones to catch Pokemon and showcasing the more active battle system.

So nothing people weren’t expecting as this year a lot of the information was just some new things coming to mobile and the updates on ZA. Nothing, but things we already knew were going to happen. Except for maybe Champions which I guess is a surprise.

  • Fantasy Life Just Lost Their Fanbase

How do you lose your main fanbase? Through greed or poor decision making and treating your primary fanbase as horribly as possible that is how. First, Fantasy Life 3DS was a beloved and popular game for 3DS and people wanted a follow-up which sort of happened when a mobile game, Fantasy Life Online, was released. That eventually shut down and eventually a sequel was announced, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. The concerns come after multiple delays citing cross platform issues, something that I don’t think anyone cared about. The original game was only available on 3DS and was good enough to carry on a fanbase on its own never really needing additional platforms. So even after the delays people waited if a game needs more time so be it, but what shocked most players was that Nintendo players were paying for the ports to other platforms. The game went up in price for all platforms, now you would think someone at Level 5 would say this is a bad idea our core fanbase for this game are Nintendo players and the ability to go cross platform will eventually pay for itself. Added to this you would think they have the money Professor Layton, another Level 5 property has most of his games previously on Nintendo DS available on mobile where they have a price and have been doing well. Next was an even worse decision for the west at least and quite possibly places like the U.K and other areas, but no one is able to prove a physical version of this game exists. This is detrimental to the game as well most players like physical copies of games rather than relying on internet for their games. Further, every system besides switch has an early access scheduled prior to the games release. I highly recommend a video by Miss Bubbles who covers most of this and explains further.

  • Bioware In Trouble Again

There are less than 100 people working at Bioware. This is likely due to well working for EA in the first place. A publisher notorious for buying companies in their prime letting them put out some of their best work then killing all hope with poor decisions and greed. All Bioware had to do before signing that paper was ask where is Maxis right now. Mostly this is due to decline believe it or not I don’t think Dragon Age the Veilguard was solely responsible for this though probably contributed. First if we look at their library for the last few couple years their only notable title was a remaster of the Mass Effect Trilogy, but I don’t think that would be good enough to cover for Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age the Veilguards failure. Bioware at its best made millions and even contributed to RPGs made today at worst we got Sonic the Dark Brotherhood, but even then aside from music and some gameplay wasn’t too bad. Now, though, Bioware’s newer developers shoehorn in the most pointless story and plot points. Further, how the characters are written also is worse. Honestly if you put Veilguard up to any other Bioware game the only thing it has going for it is it looks nicer, but in terms of quality, gameplay, writing, or anything else someone might judge it falls behind severely. If you told someone Veilguard was some fan made game or spinoff set (or made by some small team similar to Mass Effect 3’s DLC) in the Dragon Age world they would probably believe you. The problem also comes with competition right now Balder’s Gate 3 is the far better choice and much like the first 3 Dragon Age games has a connected world. EA is currently shuffling staff to new locations and permanent work within the company others are just laid off. It should be noted that only around 1 or 2 developers from Bioware’s original games have been working on their games now and all of the original team have gone to better games and passions or laid off when Veilguard was in early development.

  • Pokemon Collaboration Games

For whatever reason I wanted to look into games where Pokemon oddly worked with not only other genres, but other developers. While I won’t dedicate an entire review to any of these because for some of them I don’t have a lot of experience with that genre. Most obvious would be the Super Smash Bros series, but I wanted to look at others.

Harmoknight was a E-shop game that was primarily a rythm platformer and featured multiple tracks from the Gen 5 series of Pokemon games and multiple themed maps. I do recall playing this when it was released, but quickly learned I don’t have particularly good rythm and mostly only used it as a time waster. It wasn’t a bad game just not for me.

    Pokken Tournament/ Pokken Tournament DX

This game originally failed due to the Wii U being possibly the worst console, but reappeared on switch with all the characters and most DLC unlocked. It is a 1v1 arena fighter worked on by Bandai Namco the owners of the Tekken series. unfortunately, while I do have fun with the game most of my gameplay is random button mashing. I don’t have a ton of experience with games like Tekken and Mortal Kombat. I have played some of the games, but nowhere near enough to give a proper review or analysis to.

    Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Series

Can I count this as a crossover given this is very much ingrained in Pokemon by now? It is primarily a game done by different developers this time being Spike Chunsoft. Though while good games I struggle to find games of similar genre done by these developers. Chunsoft is known for assisting and developing games like Danganrompa and AI the Somnium Files, but while a normal crossover would bring gameplay and characters from the other game Mystery Dungeon really doesn’t. While it does have type advantage and level up. These are in Pokemons main series.

    Pokemon Conquest

Based on the Nobunaga’s Ambition series Pokemon Conquest primarily takes its gameplay as a tactics genre. With multiple Kingdoms to unlock and battle. ensuring loyalty and more focus on maps and terrain to cause damage to opponents. It should be noted that many wrongly believe Hyrule Warriors was the first time Koei Tecmo worked with Nintendo, but this game predates Hyrule Warriors by nearly 10 years. It does make me wonder if we are ever going to see more of the tactics genre or Warriors for Pokemon. Especially with how well recieved Nintendo’s own Fire Emblem series has been recently.

  • Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Review

These two games greatly surpass the main series of Gen 6 games. Introducing Fairy Types, Mega Evolution, and multiple changes from updated teams, new Pokemon, and the new Delta Episode. Now I played this because of Pokemon Legends A-Z. It is a turn based RPG and customizing your team, but there are some things in this game that were advertised as new, but actually existed in spin off games. Soaring an ability exclusive to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire was introduced in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs as was riding Pokemon a mechanic that would later be put into Gen 7.

There are a few things this game did right that the Kalos games didn’t. The first a lot of the environments are amazing and look good. Even though it is a remake of a Gameboy Advance game it feels new with new cutscenes and characters stand out and are more fleshed out than before. This game doesn’t feel like a one to one remake like Fire red/ Leaf green and Brilliant Diamond/Shining Peral did. It feels like a new game on its own and trying to fix the mistakes from X and Y as well. Also if playing all of these Gen 6 games did anything it made me want to replay Sun, Moon and the Ultra games again so look forward to a review on those.

    Score: 9/10

  • Among Us VS Fall Guys

When it comes to video games that went viral due to ease of access and a pandemic they gave people ways to talk to others without being in person. Further, a fun game to play was also a win, but which game was better.

    Gameplay

Among Us relies on teamwork crew and imposters need to work together. Either through confusion or visual tasks. Now with the multiple maps this is rather tedious. While I enjoy Skeld as it seems the game was built around that map other areas just aren’t as fun to me, Airship is a reference to the developers previous game the Henry Stickman Collection, but it is just too big with multiple sections it can take forever to find anyone, Mira has the disadvantage of having limited areas to explore and heavily favors crew with the hallway meeting, and Helix is just empty with everything spread out. Now this doesn’t mean that the game on these maps is bad as often it is the players who make the game fun and with them being able to bring more to the game often I have the most fun ignoring the game and reading what other players are saying.

Fall Guys has less teamwork and interactions with other players. Being a battle royale makes this game very different. There are a series of obstacle courses designed to eliminate various players until only a few remain. One thing is as these game continue it just becomes slower and it feels like the game more waiting for someone to lose as opposed to how hectic things could actually be. When put up to Among Us where something is always happening. It feels more empty and less fun as it is usually two or three players left. Yes you can leave a game at anytime, but it is a boring slog.

    Graphics

Both these games have very simplistic design and graphics Among Us really plays into that as well as taking advantage of the cartoony atmosphere. Everything from their advertising to easy to see and identify colors is actually vital to the game. Identifying who is the Imposter or otherwise who the Imposter should leave alive or not is easy to understand.

Fall Guys uses bright colors at all times to indicate something to avoid and for players, assisting in reaction as something to avoid, but it really doesn’t do anything past that. While yes the warning is nice when there are about a hundred other players going the same way and jumps don’t always land where you think it is easy to get thrown off anyway.

I enjoyed both these games, but found that they both end similarly. Eventually a Hacker will join and ruin the fun for everyone. Afterwards, everyone just quits the game and lobby because these guys can’t win without cheating and have really no skill at all. While I haven’t tried the new map for Among Us yet and people are waiting for Fall Guys’ next update it is really impressive how far these two games have come especially considering they weren’t really well known on release.

  • Top 9 Favorite Pokemon

I picked my favorite Pokemon from every generation and decided to list them. Now there are well over 1000 Pokemon at this point so making a Top 10 doesn’t really cover all the Pokemon I like, but one per generation can make it easier.

    9 – Clodsire

I don’t like the majority of Gen 9 Pokemon, but Clodsire is a pretty fun Pokemon. While not the best attack or special attack is amazing defense and special defense. Now that is not just a good stall, but with the ability Water Absorb you effectively have no common weakness as the part poison is great against grass. With moves like Toxic and Venoshock combined with ground type moves such as Earthquake can make this thing a nightmare for opponents.

    8- Corviknight

Gen 8 had a lot of boring looking to just no new Pokemon. Then Corviknight it looked amazing and the flying steel typing is such a breath of fresh air. A lot of early flying types up to this point were Flying Normal and that means they tend to group together and be more situational than anything. Having Steel meant there was more you could do with this Pokemon. Given that you still need to be careful, but decent stats and a speedier steel type is important.

    7 – Rockruff

I rarely use rock types on my team. Often times they are just too slow even with moves that can boost speed or using the move Trick Room. Rockruff is an exception while not necessarily fast it does have a rather decent speed and attack. When it evolves into Lycanroc depending on the time of day and ability can be an asset to any team.

    6 – Greninja

I didn’t like a lot of Gen 6 Pokemon much like Gen 8 it was full of Pokemon I didn’t want or use. I did like the starter designs though. With the games being RPGs the starters were based off of original classes in games like Final Fantasy, Thief, Knight, and Mage. The other two starters and their evolutions are just badly designed.

    5 – Lillipup

Lillipup is a Pokemon I didn’t think I’d ever use, but with decent defense and a good move set this thing can pack a punch. It is a favorite with neutral typing only weak to fighting, but if kept on your team rather than used as fodder like a lot of early encountered Pokemon it can actually be pretty reliable. Early game it is useless for the most part, but late game with no real weakness at that point and decent stats and IVs makes it far more useful than the Starters in the Unova region.

    4 – Shinx

I have heard the complaints that Luxray is just too slow, but to be honest a decent attack an Special with enough Speed EVs can make up for it. Shinx is also pretty well rounded move set wise as TMs and specific items can definitely make up for its faults. While not great competitively due to there being only two fire types before the national dex in Gen 4 most go with Chimchar as a Starter an early electric type to help with water is essential.

    3 – Mudkip

Mudkips dual typing added to the lack of a grass type gym in gen 3 can mean he only really struggles against the rival and other water types. Which with the proper move set it can create chaos Ice Beam being useful against grass the only Pokemon that really poses any threat.

    2 – Pichu

Pichu is a relatively good introduction into the breeding mechanic. Even getting an exclusive move if the right conditions are met. Then combined with an easily obtainable evolution and the Light Ball, an item that doubles the attack and special attack after evolution into Pikachu.

    1 – Eevee

My favorite Pokemon not only is it cute, but depending on what it evolves into can really give your team an advantage. Eevee isn’t bad stat wise and with each evolution getting a boost in one stat depending on the situation along with type advantage.

Like I said with over 1000 creatures at this point a Top Ten doesn’t even scratch the surface, but I can do one per generation.
